On Monday, former President Donald Trump warned that the U.S. would impose a 50% tariff on Chinese imports if Beijing doesn’t reverse its recent tariff increase. This marks a significant
escalation in the ongoing trade conflict between the two economic giants.
The threat follows a back-and-forth of tariff announcements. Last week, the White House unveiled a 34% tariff on Chinese goods as part of what it called “reciprocal” measures. In response, China matched the move with its own 34% tariff on American imports.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump slammed China’s retaliation, saying it came "despite my warning" against further tariff increases. He declared that if China doesn't roll back its 34% tariff by April 8, the U.S. will hit back with an additional 50% tariff starting April 9.
“All talks with China concerning their requested meetings with us will be terminated,” Trump added, indicating a halt in diplomatic efforts if Beijing doesn't comply.
Trump also noted that new negotiations with other countries would begin immediately.
