China escalated its bid for digital education leadership on Tuesday, unveiling a new global AI service platform designed to export high-tech learning tools and high-quality resources to an
international audience.
The announcement, made during the 2026 World Digital Education Conference, marks a significant expansion of the "Smart Education of China" initiative. The platform, which already claims a footprint in approximately 220 countries and regions, has been retooled to better integrate artificial intelligence into the classroom and beyond.
Expanding the digital Silk Road
The upgraded infrastructure introduces several key pillars aimed at global users:
AI Education Service Platform: A centralized hub for AI-driven pedagogical tools.
Lifelong Learning Hub: A portal dedicated to continuous adult education and professional development.
Chinese Language Community: An interactive space for global learners to engage with Mandarin and Chinese culture.
A policy push for human development
The three-day conference, which concludes May 13, served as a stage for Beijing to release a comprehensive report detailing its policy progress in "smart education." Beyond the software, the event produced a formal initiative urging the international community to leverage AI for "well-rounded and sustainable human development."
Addressing global inequality
A central theme of the Hangzhou summit was the "digital divide." Delegates called for a concerted effort to prevent AI from becoming a wedge between developed and developing nations.
The initiative advocates for the open sharing of digital tools, suggesting that smart education platforms should serve as a bridge to ensure that high-quality resources are not confined by geographic or economic borders. By positioning itself as a provider of these services, China is signaling its intent to set the standard for how AI governs the future of global learning.
