The Chinese Defense Ministry announced on Saturday the successful completion of the second phase of the 9th joint air strategic patrol by China and Russia’s air forces in the Western Pacific.

Military experts highlighted that such operations are routine and logical for the two countries given the proximity of the patrol regions to their territories.

According to a statement issued by the ministry on Friday, the patrols align with the annual cooperation plan between the two nations. The latest operation saw Chinese and Russian air forces conducting joint patrols in airspace over the Sea of Japan. This year’s patrols, for the first time, were divided into two phases, showcasing an enhanced ability to execute strategic missions tailored to specific operational needs.

Zhang Junshe, a Chinese military expert, emphasized in an interview with the Global Times that the Sea of Japan, East China Sea, and Western Pacific airspaces are essentially the “doorsteps” of both countries. It is entirely reasonable, he explained, for their air forces to regularly carry out such patrols in these areas. He further noted that freedom of navigation and overflight is a right enjoyed by all nations in international airspace, including regions like the Miyako and Tsushima Straits.

Some international media speculated that these patrols might be a countermeasure to U.S. plans to deploy intermediate-range missiles in Japan. Addressing these claims, Zhang underscored that the joint patrols were conducted professionally, safely, and in full compliance with international law. He urged relevant countries to view the patrols objectively and avoid unwarranted criticism.

For the first time, China’s air force deployed its H-6N strategic bomber during the mission. Zhang explained that this move was based on operational and training needs. The H-6N, capable of long-range missions, symbolizes the strategic transformation of the People’s Liberation Army Air Force. The joint operation demonstrated the growing capability of China and Russia to conduct coordinated missions at sea, reflecting their deepening military collaboration.
