China's Foreign Minister, Qin Gang, has been absent from public view for 23 days, triggering widespread speculation and highlighting the country's secrecy. Qin, appointed to the position last

December, is considered a trusted aide of President Xi Jinping. His extended absence has attracted scrutiny not only from diplomats and China observers but also from ordinary Chinese citizens.

When asked about his whereabouts, the Foreign Ministry spokesperson provided no information, which further fueled speculation. In China's opaque system, the sudden disappearance of high-profile officials can indicate trouble, leading to rumors and suspicion. Qin's absence is notable as one of the most senior officials to be absent for such a long period.

Instances of high-profile figures disappearing in China without explanation, only to resurface later under criminal investigation, are not uncommon. Even President Xi Jinping himself vanished briefly before assuming leadership, sparking rumors about his health and potential power struggles within the Communist Party.

While the foreign ministry cited health reasons for Qin's non-attendance at a diplomatic gathering in Indonesia, the official transcript omitted this explanation. Qin's predecessor attended the event instead. Talks between Qin and the EU foreign policy chief were also postponed without explanation.

Qin's absence from significant events, including President Xi's meeting with former Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte, has intensified speculation. Online searches for his name on China's largest search engine, Baidu, have surged dramatically. The speculation includes rumors of an alleged extramarital affair, although the Foreign Ministry spokesperson denied knowledge of such matters.

China's opaque diplomatic system and high-level decision-making processes have been highlighted by Qin's disappearance, according to analysts. While it remains unclear if Qin is in trouble or when he will reappear, the fact that rumors about a senior official are being openly discussed on Chinese social media without complete censorship is unusual.

Qin's rise to foreign minister was swift, and he is one of the youngest individuals appointed to the role in China's history. Despite his past reputation as a tough-talking diplomat, he is believed to have distanced himself from China's "wolf warrior" style of diplomacy. The lack of transparency in China's system makes it difficult to determine the true nature of Qin's absence, leaving room for speculation about power struggles, corruption, abuse of power, and romantic relationships.
